“Skimmia are totally hardy and will grow in conditions from full sun to shade, and even accept a fair amount of neglect”Paraic Horkan
Paraics plant of the month for November is the lovely Skimmia Japonica.
Skimmia shrubs offer fabulous colour from its foliage and flowers, and its vibrant red winter berries mark Skimmia out as a must have garden plant.
Skimmia work brilliantly in patio pots as well as flower and shrub borders. They are totally hardy and will grow in conditions from full sun to shade, and even accept a fair amount of neglect.
One of my favourite Skimmia varieties is Skimmia Japonica Obsession, This easy to grow Skimmia variety grows to between 30 and 90cm (1-3 ft) in ten years, it is unlikely to outgrow an area and is very suitable for growing in pots.
Skimmia Japonica Obsession is a compact evergreen shrub. It sports white scented flowers in spring followed by attractive bright red berries in autumn and winter.
These striking red berries and red flower buds make Skimmia Japonica Obsession a special plant and a great addition to any garden.
These features, together with the compact growth habit and dark green foliage make this a uniquely attractive plant suitable for all gardens.
Some varieties of Skimmia are female (Skimmia japonica ‘obsession’) and as such will produce clusters of berries from August if they have been pollinated by a male variety such as Skimmia japonica ‘Rubella’.
