show-gardens-1-big-imageThe 10th annual Bloom in the Park starts this Thursday and runs over the entire bank holiday weekend. The festival is open each day from 9 am – 6 pm. The festival features a host of activities including live music, children’s entertainment and panel discussions and is guaranteed to be a wonderful family day out! But with so much to see and do where do you begin?

Garden expert Paraic Horkan had a sneak peak around Bloom this week and got to see a preview of all of the show gardens. With over 20 show gardens and 7 postcard gardens to see there is a lot on offer, but Paraic has has picked some of his favourite show gardens, so make sure to add these to your ‘must see’ list on your day at Bloom!

bougainvillea photoLiving The Vida‘ By Alan Rudden.
Alan Rudden is a garden and landscape designer who has previously won gold medals at Bloom 2014 and 2015. His 2016 entry is another stunning example of the versatility of gardens. Based on Chilean culture, the garden is contemporary in style but features many Chilean and South African influences evident in the use of materials and planting style. This garden features many wonderful plants such as the flowering bougainvillea and also many edible plants such as olive trees, grape vines, and mandarins. This garden perfectly represents the Chilean’s love of food and of eating Al Fresco.

Yi Garden‘ By Meng Pan
This wonderful garden originates from Yangzhou City in China. The Yangzhou Garden is named ‘Yi Garden’ which literally translates as Garden of Friendship. Yangzhou gardens are famous for their oddly layered rockeries and this garden has some wonderful examples on display, not to mention making a fantastic use of water. Also containing many architectural structures including a Chinese House, this garden is a fantastic way to see a real Chinese garden and it is open to the general public. This is a garden that is definitely not to be missed!

In this garden by Kieran Dunne and Anthony Ryan a bedroom has been incorporated into the garden. The garden is intended to provide a relaxing and reflective retreat which is accomplished through the use of soft coloured plants, which have a subtle tranquil and calming effect, and careful planting to achieve a sense of path and flow. There are some wonderful plants on display at this garden including the beautiful Korna Kousa with its stunning white flowers. This garden is a great example of how an outdoor space can easily become a relaxing retreat from the outside world!

There are many more wonderful show gardens to see, some with wonderful sculptures or structures and some featuring amazing uses of flowers. But while at Bloom make sure to take the opportunity to see the Victorian Walled Kitchen Garden to see the President’s vegetable patch. This is a simply stunning and fabulously kept kitchen garden with not a single weed to be found, thanks to a great job by the OPW. There are loads of vegetables and berries growing but there are also lots of bee friendly plants, and beautiful fruit trees all around the walled garden. This is definitely a beautiful garden that is not to be missed!

IMG_3819Paraic Horkan will also be giving a talk on the Garden Expert Stage on Sunday the 5th at 12.30, and again at 2.30. He will talking about how to add instant colour to your garden, particularly with pots, containers and hanging baskets.

While it would be easy to spend all your time looking through all the gardens do remember that there is a lot more to see and do at Bloom in the Park! Being organised by Bord Bia, Bloom in the Park offers the public a chance to learn more about Irish fruit, vegetable and potato production, as well a chance to meet with artisan food producers at the food village. There are over 100 food stall at this years Bloom and 25 Food Demonstrations!

For those of you with families there is a number of child friendly activities, demonstrations, a playground and much much more! And don’t forget children are admitted free of charge! Bloom is guaranteed to be a wonderful day out, and it seems we are even going to have the weather to match!
