Boxwood is a very neat, slow-growing, evergreen shrub which is perfect for topiary features. This spiral can be a stunning garden feature in pots or containers, in an ornamental border or on a patio, or two either side of a door or pathway. It is a hardy shrub making it ideal for pubs and restaurants.
Planting Instructions:
Boxwood is planted 30cm apart, in either autumn or spring. Plant with some good quality compost and add fertilizer for stronger growth.
Aftercare:
Boxwood Buxus sempervirens should be pruned at the end of May/first week of June. The new growth that comes out in late spring can be identified by it's lighter green appearance. It's important to remember that this new growth needs to turn slightly leathery before you start to prune it. Feel the leaves to determine this.
A second trim can be made in autumn - late September/October, and this will tidy it up a bit for the coming winter months. Boxwood should never be clipped or watered in hot conditions or bright sunlight; the cut areas may well burn and turn brown. Once brown they will remain dead and just fall off which is obviously not ideal for an evergreen hedge. Feeding with shrub fertilizer or for small areas you can use will help keep the boxwood a health plant.
Common Problems
Box blight remains the current, most serious problem. Yellowing or bronzing of the foliage can be classic signs of root stress (lack of or too much water).
Secrets to success:
Large Boxwood pots they will still need regular watering. Buxus is not keen on their roots drying out and even the largest of pots will need tending as rainfall alone will not be sufficient. When planting Box in a garden bed or similar, you will still need to water it sufficiently to help it become established. If your site/ground is lacking nutrients you will need to feed.
